Mk2? Mk3? Check the bulkhead, chassis legs, boot floor, inner and outer arches etc... Depending on model/year/engine there are a tonne of mechanical bits to check but you'll need to provide more info really. Oh and posting in the right section might help.

The grill and door mirrors tend to be fine, everything else... that's a different story.

depends which shape you either want or like the shape of.

in 2003 i wanted a saloon as they didnt race hatchbacks in the BTCC i remember so well winning races from 1990 onwards, i adored the shape, my mate had an sri seh130 saloon back then, i loved that and you can a shed load of sh1tte in a saloon still. mines ace and owes me nowt, has many years ahead still and hits allegedly 140+ in 4th or 42 to the gallon on a trip with all the stuff I wanted on it.

now i have a hatch too as it turned up and although grandads still tow crappy mobile chicane caravans with hatchback ones, it came up at the right time and was auto too which i wanted to run around in and i needed a car. its ace. shagged ones seem to rattle in the tailgate a bit though but they are just such a reliable runaround. it aint no xe though, the old 1.6. its fun enough mind.

sri saloon xe with some added goodness is the way forward imo. v6 manual cdx/diplomat if you to. mi say go for some spec, but i would, as mine has lots.

if you prefer slightly comfier cruising then a 2.0 8 valve with the long ratio gearbox may suit. it did for me. shorter geared ones are a bit manic and less relaxed but some like the revs and bad economy when thrashed. when and if the 8V NE lets go you can drop in the xe like i did and smiles per mile is close to unbeatable for a few hundered quid all up. i dont rate/like/have any affinity for the 1.8 spi ones or 2.0 ecotec ones, never had one, dont want one. xe ftw.

if u can find a decent 2.0turbo and its what you want, buy it before there are none. if you can look after it that is.
