Got pulled yesterday for no insurance.

Saw an unmarked 5 series a few times around town yesterday and thought "Il keep my eye out for that then". Little did i know it would be pulling me in the van about half an hour later!

So, i was polite because genuinely had nothing to hide. Took a seat in his poorly specced E60 and went through the motions of "Your not insured" and "Yes i am"

After about 20mins on his bluetooth having Flux commercial tell me they had never heard of me (despite having policys with both them and their other company HIC) managed to work out that they had me insured with a CV04 ??? instead of the actual CW04 ???

They accepted responsibility as the policy was taken out over the phone and payed in full. Meaning it could possibly have been their error. They also said that had it been done online i would have been liable to prosecution as it would have clearly been my own mistake.

Id say anyone insured with flux maybe check your policy just incase.

Re: Got pulled yesterday for no insurance.

For 2 consecutive years no one had noticed that on my Resident's Parking permit, the Council had typed an incorrect reg number, eg. x786xxx instead of x768xxx,
it was during a 3rd year's renewal that the woman at the desk issuing asked me to make sure all my details on the parking permit are correct, and thats when i noticed the difference, and said noo you have typed an incorrect reg, she looked and said no i couldn't have as I only had to enter the new date of issue, so this must have been done when the permit was first taken out by the first clerk, as on renewals they do not alter any reg numbers unless someone asks to correct a mistake, so I almost got away with it and no PCN's were isued by any of the Parking attendents, most can't even wipe their arse , let alone read properly.

Those Police Action Kill programmes make it look like you get busted at the first corner!

Thats the impression we all get, I think no wonder many people still take to driving without an insurance taking a chance, I often wonder how?
Once I was heading for an MOT garage, had pre-arranged booking for the test as mine had expired, but just as I was going a police car followed me for a while and then changed lanes to turn right, I was going staright ahead, made me realise either they did not have the ANPR equipment or not switched on pr just can't be arsed, but I was not chellenged, i guess it may be the TV crew were not there!! lol

Thats why you should read your policy. I never take it for granted that someone on the other end of the phone will get everything right.
Technically the police were right, why would they appologise?

no need to appologise, the copper was doing his job for once, thank god it was him that pulled you and it was not from a crash or something that you would have had to swap details and then found out there was an error.

on a side note....i had some insurance taken out on some camera equipment an noticed the serial number was wrong on the cert sent to me, and looking at the small print on the back if i didn't notify them the error then any claim made would be invalid.

I don't think ANPR works that well to be honest. I have a traders policy so none of my cars flag up as insured, yet I've done 20,000+ miles all over the UK and never been stopped once.

Was pulled last year for a blip on my driver's license courtesy of the DVLA. The copper had my car impounded. I had a driver's license, insurance, tax, MOT, etc.
I phoned the DVLA and they removed said blip and I paid 360 quid to take my car back! I sold it and didn't drive again until a few weeks ago!

Very true. A mate of mine had his mini moto siezed for riding it in the street..... They sent a 7.5tonne recovery truck and actually strapped it down on the back! It would have fitted in the focus!

There used to be such a thing as "A coppers discretion".

My mum got pulled picking us up from school as kids in her 83 ford XR3. they told her that her tax was out, which it was, and that as a result her insurance would be void......

The coppers answer was "I suggest you collect your children, take the car home and dont drive it again untill its taxed" !!!!

I got stopped on the M62 in 2004. The copper asked me 'Do you have insurance?', I said 'Yes.' He said 'Are you sure?' I confirmed I had. He said 'OK then, be on your way.' Have been stopped around that time with no tax, and they had the same 'just go home and don't use it again until it's taxed.' It's rabid now though, I gave up driving because of it.

You can check you car has been added to the insurance database here. askMID

I've seen it before when cars have not been added for various reasons. Worth keeping yourself correct and not get pulled for no insurance when you actually do.

They all should be added to the MID database even if you have them for a few days.

I myself nearly had one took off me before Christmas. Get them added. Takes a few minutes.

my brother got pulled up on his last MOT on his 205 Mi16 because the plate they MOT'd turned out to be for a grey one not a red one, grey one registered in north wales and had a current MOT when it was 're-done'

after looking at the car I spotted the reg doc and back number plate were H568*** and the front one entered by the MOT tester was H586***. Number plates were on the car when bought and both made by the same place!

Not true, and saying that is scaremongering. They ought to know better.

Seriously. So if you had an accident with no tax the insurers wouldn't use it as a get out of jail free card? Thus leaving you liable to prosecution?

Re: Got pulled yesterday for no insurance.

Its all down to the wording of the policy. If they had it written that you needed to have tax then you would not be insured without it. It's doubtfull that it would be in a standard policy though.

Your reg being written wrong on the policy would mean that your insurance isn't valid though, if there was a serious crash/claim they would have tried to get out of it and had a good chance of it too.

Re: Got pulled yesterday for no insurance.

having no tax will not invalidate your insurance, having no MOT will slightly affect insurance...

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) says that insurance policies will still pay out in full on any third party claims, and in the case of damage to or theft of your own vehicle, payouts may be reduced to reflect the lower market value of a car without an MoT.

There are a very few policies that insist in the small print that an MoT must be in force otherwise they will refuse to pay. These, however, are extremely rare, but it is worth checking the wording just in case.

If the car has no road tax, the ABI says insurers are still obliged under the Road Traffic Act to pay out for both third party and comprehensive claims. The fact that you are committing an offence by not having tax is irrelevant

Yep, if you read the wording (admittedly most don't) it just says the car must be kept in a roadworthy condition. Even the Gov and insurers realise a car needs to be driven to and from an MOT and repairs (both pre-booked, obviously).
