I'm a Vauxhall man, had many cars but always attracted back to Vauxhall! I have a bora that I use for work and it has 182000 on the clock and it drives like new. Absolutely amazing cars built with quality. Can't fault VW at all.

    73bhp MK4 Astra POS

    Re: Your next car?

My school run car is the MK4 Astra - the wife has the Golf and gets a new one every 6 months.

I drive the Astra during the week and the Golf at the weekends. Its hard work coming from a 170bhp car with enough torque to rip your innards out back to a 73bhp gutless spi petrol Astra !

    Astra SXI / Coupe Turbo

    Re: Your next car?

Next car....I'd love a Volvo C30 - In reality, once the sxi pops it clogs I'll probably have another mk4 or a mk5 diesel sri. Then there's always the Coupe for some fun if i'm feeling bored with the daily driver!

Astra Dan: Didnt know you were an avenger fan!

Pitstoppete: didnt know you were either! Plans sound about right although Id be bloody keen not to modify the shell AT ALL in the conversion and thus maintain the tax free status!

For me, ill be chopping in my daily/autotest/road rally corsa for a nice reliable VW bora TDi for pounding the A9 on cruise control at 1500rpm. Too many toys already, need to stop owning daily projects!
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, thoroughly used, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming... "f*ck, what a trip!"

Al, what is it that you cant do that would lose a pre 73 car it's historical status? all my mates early race/rally cars are highly modified and they dont change status. not sure what you are getting at. is there some BS new rules coming in that would need ignoring?
In fact when I was out bedding the brakes in today a yellow/black Avenger Tiger came towards me from Andover way,all caged up and plenty of stickers/lairy bits. looked good. Be better with a 230hp 912HC Lotus twincam in it though.

    Re: Your next car?

Many many rally cars are illegal.

Any modification to the monocoque automatically demands a Q plate and IVA test now unfortuately. Of course you can risk it, or say the mods were done before 1997 but I'd be for some sympathetic modification to avoid the issue entirely!

Hmm, now there's an idea! Shall I clear out the car port?
    They're there, in their room.
