    Problems with DVLA scrapped car

Don't know if anyone else has had this problem!

I recently bought a mk2 golf to break for bits (had a few tasty bits), I stripped it within a couple of weeks and couldnt wait for the v5 to come through before scrapping. I phoned a place in the free-ads who came and picked it up. The v5 eventually came through after about 5 weeks and it seems the new ones no longer have the tick box to say the car has been scrapped. Today I went in to the local dvla office and explained the situation. They said I should of filled in the tranferring to a trader part and been given a certificate of destruction by the scrap yard. Obviously I couldnt do this as I didnt have the v5, they told me all I can do is keep sorning it every year forever!

Seems a joke to me, I think i'll either have to write to head office or next time I scrap a car get them to do some paperwork for this one too

What if B. Ananaman from Acacia Avenue came over and bought it for cash ? If you fill out the log book with his details what can the DVLA do ?

You could always export it. Obviously you need 100% confidence it's now a fridge freezer or questions will be asked if it pops up again somewhere.

So did a pikey take it then?

No waste carriers licence - No certificate of destruction.

As above, It needs to go in someones name now for insurance / sorn reasons.

The number was out of the friday-ads we have round here, did seem a bit dodgy though the business card they left had no proper business name or any address on it. I would of weighed it in myself but I took the rear stub axles off and front hubs.

It's so ridiculous that even the DVLA suggested that your only option is to SORN the car every year forever, surely someone at the DVLA must think there is something not quite right about that?

I think most things in this world are getting so pathetic, at times like this one wonders if it was ever worth being born on this earth in a highly industrialised, democratic nation! Most bizare!

I can only think of this why this is happening, it is probably due to our highly industrialisation, globalisation and cmmercial electronics revolution effecting our own DNA evolution, our brains seems to be no longer in our head, and simple common sense tasks are now being outsourced to our balls down below, and thats where I think most of the staff who makes high level decision at DVLA, have their brains in their testickle sacks instead of in their head!)

Its simple. Forget to SORN a car..... Get fined.

Revenue that the government would miss out on if SORN was a one off.

I understand the concept of SORN and not suggesting under normal circumstances it should be a one off but when they suggest you continue to SORN a car which no longer exists there is clearly something wrong.

Re: Problems with DVLA scrapped car

As for notifying the DVLA legally, one can I am sure write them a written statement and have it submitted via a lawyer, and keep all copies and if in future they demand any fines for not SORNing it, just bluntly refuse to pay and reject any such demands, and ask to be taken to a court, where these legal letters can be proof enough and the Judge can throw the case out, forcing DVLA to come to their senses and amend the rules. As long as you have legally notified the DVLA that you no longer own a car and have scrapped it yourself by dismentling its parts which you have sold on, and scrapped the body as scrap metal and I don't think they can chellenge anything on that as you did it as an individual and not as a car breaker. You are not subject to stringent rules regarding scrapping cars for disposing off pollutants when you are a professional breaker.

As there are no stringent rules on changing oil at home, as for garages they have to store the old oil and have it disposed off through a licensed dealer, whereas you could take the old oil from your car to your local council tip where they have facilities for disposing off old oils, paints, scrap metals, wood and timeber or anything for that matter including asbestos.

Re: Problems with DVLA scrapped car

Just write a letter to them along with the v5 stating you've broken it and cut the shell up yourself to weigh in.

They will send the usual letter back saying cheers blaa blaa blaa.....

I think it shows how badly run the DVLA are.

Re: Problems with DVLA scrapped car

I've just informed the DVLA of a car I scrapped just signed the log book and put scrapped in big funk off letters all over in with a letter saying " I've scrapped this car. There is no tick-box can you sort it out please"

Sorted. If they send it back I'll do the same. But I doubt it'll be coming back as I sent another logbook off for change of colour in the same envelope. I got that back all present and correct.

People get all stressed and confused as there isn't the correct section or tick box. I however get all angry and upset and do the above and or carry myself on at the local office or what not. At the end of the day it's scrapped and if they don't like it or you can't give them the info they want it's just plain funking tufftitty that doesn't change the fact it's scrapped! Once you get this through to some office waller they'll sort it for you.

Sorry for the rant but FFS this country sometimes!

Re: Problems with DVLA scrapped car

Such a load of crap, I'm having issues with this as well. My old Astra that I scrapped 4 years ago I still get letters asking me to SORN it lol. More recently my Passat and Saab have both been scrapped and at the time the DVLA had taken too long to send the new log book through so can see that being a problem in a couple of months.

Could you report it as being stolen? If a pikey took it it effectivly has been.
