how about now
4 branch, pannel filter, exaust system, good service with good plugs, bigger injectors, bigger fpr there are a few things you could do that won't break the bank
Personally I found it easier and cheaper to bin the ecotec and fit and XE, you can get uprated bits for XEV's but they're expensive new and nearly impossible to get second hand.
You can use the F18CR box as it's almost the same ratios as the F20. Only headache I had was the wiring but that wasn't too bad in the end, just used the XE loom and a few of the ecotec plugs and made up my own. Worked fine just lost the trip computer but mine was a track car so didn't bother me at all
Good service would be a good starting point as has been said.
Please lose the 'txt talk' - Thanks

LOL just beat me to it.
sorry for the txt talk, i was in a hurry
Nothing wrong with the ecotec at all mate and responds to tuning just as well as the redtop in my opinion? Dont know why there is still this whole "bin every engine off for a redtop" state of thinking tbh...
true, excatly what i have done this year to mine, very simple to do.
the problems with the ecotec is that if you do want to go further with it (cams, carbs etc) it gets expensive compared with a c20xe which there is loads of parts readily available for. second hand parts and even new are both difficult and expensive.
Easiest swap i've ever done to be honest as there's loads of room under the bonnet. Didn't even need to remove the drive shafts or anything else...put a jack under the gearbox, lifted it up and dropped the XE straight on. Engine was bolted in place in less than 10 minutes
Apart from the performance there's also the fact ecotecs have far too much emissions crap bolted to them. The standard exhaust manifold alone weighs almost as much as a K16 turbo, if you want a 4 branch for an ecotec you won't get one for less than £300 and second hand you've got next to no chance of finding one
The XEV mount from my GSi on the right...

really dont see the point in swapping a 2ltr for another 2ltr when the OP states he has a limited budget tbh. He might be lucky and get a good one but most of the crap up for sale in his budget will probably need re-building. tbh i'd stick with what whats in there.
Never take life seriously. Nobody gets out alive, anyway.
If I was you mate I'd buy a spare ecotec head, sit behind it in the garage, (presuming you have the tools/facilities to do so) and I'd set about widening the ports on the head. try your best to keep them smooth and shiny! Buy yourself a mixture of abrasive drill attachment tools and have a play. That is where you'll gain a lot of "breathing power" for your engine. When your happy with the head you could stick it on and give it a full service whilst doing so. Obviously you would have to match the manifolds at the ports otherwise it's pointless! Maybe look at updated head gasket set while it's in bits too.

X20Xev is good engine, Mate of mine has phase 2 GSI and it can keep with any phase 1,
If I was you just give it a good service and change the flywheel to a an c20ne flat type, 4 kg (lighter)
And if funds allow a 4 branch, They can be got cheaper off German Ebay than the likes of LMF.
Also there poping up more and more for sale second hand.

I put an x20xev engine in my mk4 & put a lexmaul 4 branch on it (paid £300 for it as theyre like rocking horse sh*t!) & had a 2.5" exhaust made for it & it made a big difference, i think the xev deserves more credit its given, i bought the engine for £150 2 years ago & it has never missed a beat & is still running to this day. 4 branch will be for sale soon if you're interested
As mentioned above these engines deserve a lot more credit then they get imo
Also after market bits for them are not THAT hard or expensive to find at all tbh, for example the guy above is selling his manifold and there is somebody on mk3oc selling some cams for £80?
I know so many people with redtops in astras/corsas/cavs ect and they end up getting spanked by stuff with x20xev's in because there redtops are just too old and worn out? Dont get me wrong the c20xe was a amazing engine....ten years ago? It's time to move on.
You can say every engine is underpowered when you compare it against the 1.6 Honda engine that achieved 157bhp standard of similar age...
But you can't be serious about even trying to compare these 2 Vauxhall engines? Vauxhall (GM) sacrificed build quality for cost when the X20XEV was designed. BUILD QUALITY FOR COST!!! There is no substitute for that mate. I'm up for having a go with any engine but I wouldn't waste my time especially if I was on a budget.

2 of my best mates had Ecotec Astra GSIs. They were crap. All sorts of stupid little reliability issues and so gutless compared to my Astra GTE 16v that I had at the time.
The first mate got his and soon wished he had held out for a redtop. The second was warned by the first not to get an Ecotec; subsequently he regretted buying it almost the next day![]()
He asked how to tune it up. That's what I'd do.
Then somehow the topic changed to converting to an X20XEV- I wouldn't bother.
