Poor bloke, looked bit nasty, but I can't work out how his lid came off.

I've just seen this on Facebook

I've not really been interested in MotoGP this year, but from what I did see Simoncelli was one of the best. He did take a few risks as I'm sure Lorenzo would agree with but he was entertaining to say the least!

I've seen it happen a few times doing the bike marshalling, not a nice sight .

It's not been a good year for bike racing this one (and car racing last week) .

I've just seen a video of it now, Colin Edwards must feel absolutely terrible, he had nowhere else to go. I'd like to know what happened before Edwards and Rossi got there though, he was already off the bike.

simoncelli had lost the front end of the bike, he was trying to push it back up with his knee instead of letting it slide out off the track, in doing so the bike kept turning right, straight into the path of edwards, and as he was hanging off the bike it seems his head made contact with edwards’ bike first.
when the lid rolled across the track you could see the chin strap had broken off on one side, and the forces involved in doing that don’t really bear thinking about

When you see footage of it, then you'll see where Edwards hit him, the impact seems to have been so strong as to rip the strap out the helmet.

It looks so bad to watch, theres a slow motion video on youtube, You see him just get mangled up as soon as the edwards bike hits him. Poor guy

Aye, I came across this in another report, he was having a battle with Bautista when he lost it.

yeah just watched it man and it wasnt a pretty site, im surprised he didnt die on impact as his head must have took the full whack of it, i rekon the front tyre peeled his chin strap of and sadly the other rider was helpless in the sense he couldnt do any thing to prevent hitting simonceli

the view from above the track is just gob-smacking seeing him just lying there, not good!!

bloody typical, i would imagine it was a bloody good race up until the point of the crash,

was the race stopped or did every one else continue after simonceli was attended to and the debris was cleared?

I agree he would have been a major contender for the title next year, such potential and real passion for the sport

I can see Rossi retiring as well which would be such a shame as I really wanted to see him take another title on the Ducati
