    Driving with a Quaife diff...

Now i remember people say that when driving with a diff its all very different when you come to a corner... But i new to this diff stuff...

So i nailed it in to a corner (long sweeping left) and it tried to drag me in to the land next to me (left) is that normal? Was it just unseen tram lines in the road? Or me letting off a bit make it worse? Or am i just over thinking it?

    Talk to me.

Normal and if you lift off the back will come round sharpish. I'll have to have a look to see if i can find my toe/camber etc settings for a tarmac nova.

General gist is when you have grip the car will always try to pull you in tighter ergo you can go faster round a corner. If you begin to understeer out and lift off to correct the fronts will grip again and pull you in tighter swinging the back around - be carefull experimenting otherwise you will find yourself heading into a hedgerow backwards.

I always tended to steer with the rear and left foot brake my LSD'd sprint car.

I'm not sure if i lifted as it happened or after tho... But thank you for this... I think i'll keep testing it but on corners with more room and quieter.

the best experiance to understand a quaife diff is a t junction, find a quite one turn the wheel left or right and launch as if you were in a straight line and you accelerate like your wheels were pointing straight only around the corner lol

they take some getting used to which is why people often dont like them over a more predictable plate diff

Just keep it planted, and steer less.

Yeah i've been thinking middle of the road might be best.. Sadly around here all the best corners have armco on the sides...

Right, can't put my hand on my set-up info but as i recall :-

Front 0.5-3 degrees Negative camber and 0.5-1.5 degrees toe OUT I also used eccentric top mounts and the usual position for the strut was as far back and inboard as i could get it. 250/275 or 300 Lbs springs Bilstein tarmac dampers uniballs and nylon bushings
Rear 1 degree Negative camber and 1 degree toe IN. 500 or 600 Lbs springs Bilstein tarmac dampers nylon bushings

This isn't a recommendation for a road car (it'll probably be bloody dangerous and eat your tyres), this is the setup range i used to use for sprints and hillclimbs on smooth sealed surfaces. This produced a car that was quite pointy and definately twitchy at the rear. Not everyones cup of tea but it suited my style and i held a number of course class records and won two championships like it.

Oh and the other thing we used to say about front wheel drive cars with a diff is that there were two rules to abide by when things start to go wrong :-
    1) Never ever lift off...
    2) When the situation is looking hopeless and you are ****ting yourself refer to rule #1

I remember when we first fitted mine and went for a spirited drive, i actually clipped the o/s/f on the first roundabout.

Takes some getting used to on the road, but once on track you will wonder how you ever had any fun without one.

Am i reading that right? toe on the rears? One toe in the other toe out? One with a bit of negative the other upright? Looks like it'll be crabbing up the road? Could explain why it goes round lefts differently to rights? Bent rear beam? dodgy installation of rear disk conversion (if it has one)? Of course i could have misinterpreted this in my haste to get to the pub..... but time to get the shims out methinks.

no you’re reading it right, needs some adjusting that, maybe look at the rear beam and its mounts as it seems its sitting a bit skewed, but the toe could be hub related too
