Updating details with the DVLA after an engine conversion

    .

Firstly. These are based on my experience.

    The V5 Document

    DVLA website link

The DVLA state on their site that you will need written evidence of any changes to engine number and cylinder capacity (cc).

    Written evidence can be:

    * a receipt for the replacement engine
    * written evidence from the manufacturer
    * an inspection report provided for insurance purposes
    * written confirmation on headed paper from a garage if the change in engine size took place before you bought the vehicle

What the DVLA are basically looking for is confirmation of the engine number and size in case the engine has came from a stolen car and had the engine number altered.

The easiest option for me, from those above, was to get written evidence from Vauxhall since I bought the engine 2nd hand.

How did I get the written confirmation? I contacted Vauxhall customer services directly on 0845 0902044

I just called them up, explained that I had changed the engine in the Corsa and that the DVLA were looking for me to get a letter on Vauxhall headed paper confirming the engine number, size in cc and fuel type.

The lady that I spoke to couldn't have been more helpful. I wasn't charged a penny.

Once you have done that send away your V5 with the new engine number and engine size details along with the Vauxhall letter and a covering letter.

The DVLA didn't request any form of check to be done on my car but you never know.

If anyone has any questions please post them here rather than sending a PM. Thanks.

Thanks to Dave Dempsey for the tips too.

    No problem.

They didn't want to check mine, no. You may not be as lucky so be prepared if they do.

So does 'headed paper from a garage' mean from a vauxhall dealership only?

Re: Updating details with the DVLA after an engine conversion

Can Vauxhall confirm the year of the engine as well? As if so that's a bonus cause my corsa turbo has a 20xe lump so is pre cat, so no emission test for me then hopefully

As the engine size is the same all you have to do is fill out the v5 with the new engine number and send it off to dvla

so if you replace a non turbo engine with a turbo'd engine do you not have to tell them about the turbo? or will they be able to tell by the engine number?

also, how would you do this if you converted the engine yourself?

    Thanks

Re: Updating details with the DVLA after an engine conversion

In theory all you will have to do is send the log book off with the new engine number listed.

Then it's down to telling your insurance that it is the same basic engine just now it's turbocharged.

Re: Updating details with the DVLA after an engine conversion

ok, thats great! i just emailed the DVLA asking if a receipt from a private seller of an engine is sufficient evidence to send with the V% document.

i will post up the reply along with a screen shot as this will be helpful to most people on here who do conversions themselvs

Re: Updating details with the DVLA after an engine conversion

Well they didn't answer my question about a receipt from a private seller, but this is what i got back from them. (my encine is a 2000cc on the log book, so im going to put my 20let down as the same as well so i dont need any documents for it)

Thank you for your email received on 3/12/12. Your email reference number is 1099972.

As the engine is not a fixed component of a car, the engine number is not a permanent identification feature. If the engine is changed, the registered keeper should notify DVLA using the V5C Registration Certificate.

Please enter the new details in section 7 Changes to current vehicle on your V5C. However, before our records can be amended, it may be necessary for you to provide documentary evidence to support the change.

Documentary evidence is not required in the following instances only,

Engine change is an exact like for like replacement (same cc)
Vehicle was manufactured pre 1973 (historic)
Engine change is for a post 1973 to pre- March 2001 (Private Light Goods PLG) vehicle and the engine change will not reduce the rate of duty payable

If evidence is required the evidence can take the form of:

    • a receipt of purchase containing cylinder capacity information for the replacement engine
    • written confirmation from your insurance company.
    • written confirmation by the manufacturers.

The V5C and documentary evidence should be sent to DVLA. Only original documentation is acceptable and it will be returned after verification.

If, however, you also need to tax the vehicle, you can apply at your nearest DVLA Local Office by filling in the form V10 Application for a tax disc (available at the Post Office® or to download from http://www.gov.uk/car-tax-disc-vehic...using-form-v10), which must be accompanied by the V5C. You can find the address for your nearest DVLA Local Office by telephoning 0300 123 1277 (you will be asked to give a post code) or at www.gov.uk/dvla-offices

It doesnt say that the receipt must be from a shop, or breakers, just a receipt, so i would assume a receipt from a private seller with all the information on it, like cc, engine no etc would be sufficient?

Re: Updating details with the DVLA after an engine conversion

As the engine cc is staying the same, you don't need to send anything off. Just fill in the new engine number.

Says so in the above email.

you still have to send the V5 away so they can update the engine no on their database. they will send you back another one with the new engine number on it.
