Re: STOLEN: Silver Mk4 Astra Gsi From Hemel Hempstead GL53 POH

Same question as the first reply in that linked thread, How the hell are they by-passing the immobiliser? If it's so easily possible are we heading for a new phase of car crime?

Possibly fitted a remote start and taped the immobiliser key to the transponder ?
House broken into / pocket picked in a public place and keys taken ?
ECU and transponder changed ? Bit of a pig on the MK4 though as they tend to have a metal bracket around the transponder which makes unplugging it a nightmare
    Cloned key ?

the bloke who made me a new key had it programmed in seconds, if someone has access to equitment i think the ECU and immob is easily bypassed.... an astra was pinched from my street, seen on there cctv been towed away.... but seen on other cams by the police been driven, then found burnt out....

you can easily get somewhere to copy a chipped key. However programing a new one takes a while, and needs more dedicated software. However I think opcom can do it!

it doesn't take a while bud. most astra codes need the dealer or tech2, others need the car at the shop and takes about an hour but the other basic fixed code ones can be done in under an hour with only the key being needed.

If you have a new key chip, laptop/software and just a little extra information it would take less than a minute to drive away once you've defeated the mechanical locks.

It's therefore vitally important to never keep the service book, manual and everything else that comes in the same little folder in the glovebox.

Dealers should ask for the V5 and ID so in theory you shouldn't be able to obtain a key from the VIN alone. Even if they did manage to obtain a replacement key that'll only get them round the locks, not the immobiliser as they come blank and the car needs programming to accept them (which also programs part of the chip iirc) before they can be used.

they asked for a v5 and Id just for me to get a radio code! so they must ask for it for a key surely?

You're missing the point ......... chavvy 17 year old working in a parts dept for a VX dealer ..... spots a car handy for parts / stripping ........... grabs the VIN number and gets a key cut - car can now be wheeled down the street onto a trailer without too much trouble.

You can reprogram the immobiliser with a £15 opcom from China if you have the car pass - the car pass is available from VX dealers if you have the VIN / Registration of the car - thats how I got mine.

Straight onto an OPCOM / Tech2 with a new transponder - job done !

In fact, if you were a dodgy VX employee I would think you could drive away with a car in minutes.

Does anyone know if VX keep records of each enquiry against VIN numbers ?

Re: STOLEN: Silver Mk4 Astra Gsi From Hemel Hempstead GL53 POH

It's a danger in all dealerships I guess. One would hope that security related orders like keys and security codes are subject to dual sign offs to avoid internal fraud, but I bet they're not. There will be a record of the order though, that's for certain.

But then, consider the dodgy technician scenario. Spots a car he wants for parts when it comes in for service/warranty work - Has access to the customer's address, probably the car pass including the key number and immobiliser code as it'll be in the car with the service book no doubt. Blank key off ebay or any key cutting place for cash (nice and anonymous), cut according to code if you know how to interpret them (and lots of back street locksmiths do!) and you got yourself a copy of the customer's key off the record with little chance of a trace on it. Go collect car in the small hours when everyone's in bed.

Indeed - in fact give me any VX key and I can make a duplicate of it in minutes (physically - not with the transponder) without key cutting equipment.

Technology has a lot to answer for.

so if a key can be got within minutes from the VIN, for the mechanical locks, open the door, put your blank chip in the key, in to the ignition, plug tech2 in, key programmed, 2 turns, press lock or unlock, remote now sync'ed

Car key made within 20 minutes..... car stolen!
