Why do you want to lighten it??? Surely there is no point if you're keeping your seats :/

Tbh the 2.0 isn't worth doing anything to. Driven one and it's just so vague :/

because it weighs 1.9 ton nearly, want it as light as i can get it, but need the seats in it, as i dnt have a car and the van wasnt practical for weekend use due to having no rear seats. also being only 21 with no no claims its going to be very hard to insure a t5, obviously going to be replacing the suspension with uprated stuff, but was hoping to take out any extra weight that doesnt need to be there.

you're not really going to make a difference by gutting the doors or throwing away small pieces of trim. definitely less than 10kg...also, if you gut the doors, what will you put the door cards on???

why not just buy a different or lighter car?? ive had three volvo's so im not trying to put you off or anything, just what your doing is not worth it

spare wheel & jack, etc will have a bit of weight, that'll save some. If you have an angle grinder whip the roof off. Massive weight saving and nice for summer 2011!

The 2.5 is a good all-rounder. Thirsty around town though.

Tbh I don't understand what the great need to save weight is, I can only assume as an economy thing because you won't see any noticeable increase in speed, or economy for that matter.

They're great cars, well built and will last a lifetime with basic maintenance, but they are NOT cheap to run. If you want weight saving for economy and some extra speed then you'd be better off buying a different car altogether. I'd suggest a decent 1.9TD of some sort as most go well and are good on fuel.

    Re: opinions on volvo 850

im not fussed about how much fuel it uses, more interested getting the weight down a bit as you could really feel it when cornering, i like the car,not one to follow trends so im not overly concerned about what my mates think, the car had a brand new engine in it 20k ago mechanically its sound, goes really well for such a big car allot faster than the mondeos and vectras ive had.it originally come with leather but father wanted a van and everything behind the front seats were binned.so im asuming everyones oppinion is get a decent set of springs and dampers for it, and not bother with removing weight. think the bodyroll multiplys how it feels weight wise.

    A 2.0 850 is NOT 1.9 Tonnes. They are 1.4 tonnes.

Personally the 2.0 is gutless, makes lots of noise but doesn't go very quick.

    I'd personally be looking for the 2.5 10v or 2.5 20v

Mucker, i've scrapped over 30 of the things, and NEVER have they EVER been close to that weight. A V70 is heavier and that STILL wasn't anywhere near the weight.

If you really want to prove me right, go park it on a weighbridge.

    Either way:

Big old Bus + small engine = crap fuel economy

Theres nothing siginificant you can remove from that car thats going to improve the economy, just have a lighter right foot
