Your biggest mechanical doh moment .

Did a big one today .. thought the oil feed pipe to the turbo was leaking oil .. was pretty sure it was coming from there .
Cut the pipe and pulled it out and there is nothing wrong with it

Could have blowed into it and could have found any leaks etc ...

Now gotta buy a new pipe for about £45 and remove the engine mount and the aircon pump .
I canny invest in ya and for that reason , I'm oot .

Fitted a set of highlift cams to my 106 Gti. Thought i would be good i try to do it myself. Everything went well. Started it up took it a drive was much faster. Then started tapping badly. Timing jumped, thats when i learned when you tighten the timing belt you take the slack out of the tensioner side,i just put the belt on any old way and tightend it up lmao

fitted my 60mm springs and dampers on my old astra, and didnt get the strut top seated quite right on the damper so tightened it up and just trapped it (didnt realise, obviously) so after a few miles i hear this knocking noise, have a check around, but cant really find where its coming from. it persists for about 2 months till i change the strut tops for MOT then see where the knocking noise was coming from... the top of the damper had cut a slot about 20m long in the strut top lmao oops

also started up a car without tightening the oil filter result lots of rags and cleaning time

Your biggest mechanical doh moment .

Many years ago when I was an apprentice I was doing a job on a year old golf. I was using a 19mm (I think) on the crank pulley to turn the engine over but left it on the crank pulley bolt. Shut the bonnet then started the car up.....

Bang, spanner flew up the way and made a nice mess off the bonnet. I was not flavour of the month!
    Jack said,

Surely you are only pulling it one way though? ie. you are pulling it along its length.

Re: Your biggest mechanical doh moment .

Years ago the water pump failed on my 1.4 8v Mk3 Astra. Fitted new pump and belt, fired it up to see if it ran again (without refitting the bottom pulley and bolt) was chuffed when it ticked over like a dream, blipped the throttle and the crank pulley moved away from the oil pump - que belt coming off and bending the valves!!! ****ing doh!!! Was a lesson learned the hard way, fully refit everything before testing!!!

Spending 10 minutes with a rubber mallet whacking the back of a wheel, then kicking it trying to get it to come off. I could see all 4 wheel bolts on the ground next to me so that wasn't the problem.

Re: Your biggest mechanical doh moment .

Removing astra gte sunroof on my own and not realising how heavy it was. 40KG suddenly dropped on me as I removed last nut. Was on all fours but upside down with this sodding sunroof on top of me. My yells for help weren't heard and I had to clamber out from underneath the thing sweating like a mofo.

Also recently topped up the oil in my GTE 16v using the cannot-be-arsed-to-check-the-dipstick method. Overfilled it and only realised this on a spirited drive from my house to cirencester on the stroud road. Sweeping left hand bend at 70 mph..............MASSIVE SMOKE SCREEN from behind the car. Carped it thinking I had lunched the car. No strange noises..........then it became clear (both in the sky and my mind) that 1 litre to top up my car was probably overkill and I was rewared with SURGE.

    NICE!

Driving up onto and over these ... (using only a mirror to check if I'm on the middle on both)

afterwards, I welded the two L-shaped parts on 'em ...
Note: the above may or may not be entirely correct.
I wondered why the frisbee was getting bigger, and then it struck me.

Glued in a new rear screen on the corsa, used a bit of rubber hose to prop the boot slightly, shut the drivers door, air pressure popped the boot lid up a bit and slammed shut as the pipe rolled out onto the floor.......closeley followed by my rear screen straight onto my driveway

haha some of these are quite bad, one of mine was probably removing the battery on a car and then spending an hour trying to figure out why the central locking wasnt working. haha o dear

haha, thats got to be common.... I laid up my BM last year for winter and did exactly that. Drove out of the garage, onto the drive. Cleaned it inside and out, disconnected the battery. Pushed the car back into the garage because I knew it wouldn't start. (Brain was still working at this point) Ran in the house for a cuppa, went back out to lock the car and the Remote Central Locking had "stopped" working....
I went back into the house to get the spare fob, that "didn't" work either lol
Went to the shop and bought a fob battery and replaced the fob battery with the new one, for it to still not "work". So I thought, sod it I will lock it buy key. Went and put the key intot the lock and ONLY then as I turned the key..... I noticed the other door not lock.
So I closed the garage door and went inside lmao
