    Vehicle Tax Major Ccok-up

Thought I would share Wednesday mornings fun and frolics with you.

Last week my partner Lindsay noticed a pair of 'community support officers'(plastic plod) sniffing around my Cavalier outside my flat.

Then on Wednesday morning, Lindsay went out to the shop at 9am and noticed a Police Traffic Vectra(Would love a go in one of these) parked in the street with two officers in it. Lindsay texted me joking that they obviously have two much time on there hands if they can stop for bacon butties lol (Is it considered cannibalism if a copper eats a bacon sarnie?

When she went out to walk the dogs at 10.30 am they where still there and, upon her return at 11am, found the traffic car parked outside the shop below our flat and the two traffic officers stood next to my car talking on there radio's. She asked them if there was a problem only to be told that THEY WERE WAITING FOR A RECOVERY TRUCK TO TOW MY CAR!

Lindsay told them defiantly that they wasnt and asked the reason why? Apparently someone had rung the police 'annonymously' stating that my car wasnt taxed and was parked on a public road. Lindsay told them that everything was above board with my car, tax mot and insurance and told them that there was a mistake. The officer told her that they'd checked the database and it was flagging up that I'd declared my vehicle SORN in September!

Lindsay said that she'd get the keys and show them the tax disc to which the officer replied that it didnt matter what the tax disc said, there database was correct! Lindsay rang me and put me onto the officer who explained it all to me and what followed was a tirade of abuse and insults towards the officer and police in general and there practice. Tbh I'm glad I was on the end of the phone coz if I'd been stood in front of him I'd have probably been nicked lol

He backed down when Lindsay thurst the tax disc under his nose and he said he'd ring me back when the recovery truck arrived.

Ten minutes later Lindsay rang me back to say they had all ******ed off and my car was still there.

The recovery truck had turned up as the officer got off the phone, they'd disputed the athenticity of my tax disc, the recovery truck driver had contacted his office who in turn rang the DVLA only for them to confirm that my car was taxed, MOT'd and insured and they shouldnt even have been there

From the anonymous phone call to the police being there on Wednesday, no-one had thought to contact to DVLA to double check regards my vehicle TAX.
Lindsay told me that they'd just said sorry, handed the tax disc back and walked off.

I've spoken to my dad since this happened(he's a retired traffic officer) and he told me that the DVLA and Police database is constantly having problems updating with each other. He also adivsed me to lodge a formal complaint which I am doing.

My advice to everyone on here, if you get pulled by the police and you know, without a doubt, that your car is fully legal and the police dispute it, stand your ground. Dont let them baffle you with law and legislation and try to pull 'a fast one' on you as there's a good chance that THEY ARE IN THE WRONG!

And if anyone taxed there car around the end of September/beginning of October it might be worth contacting the DVLA just to make sure there database is correct. Apparently, around this period, this is when there system had a 'bitch-fit' but they neglected to let the general public know!

    Jack said,

Surely you are only pulling it one way though? ie. you are pulling it along its length.

ive frequently had issues with their database being out of date, specifically over weekends!
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, thoroughly used, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming... "f*ck, what a trip!"

Just be glad they didn't actually take the car. Had it have been lifted, although you were entirely correct and everything was above board and it would have been entirely there mistake, you would've still had to have paid the storage fees etc for the car before you got it back

Yeah I know. Thats why I gave the officer a load of abuse down the phone as I knew I didnt have the money to pay to get the car back and wouldnt have had it within at least three weeks. Things is if you aint paid to get the car back on a tax related situation within a fortnight they crush the car!

I had similar problem with the DVLA recently. I had to pay an extra £35 tax on my corsa when I declared the increase in engine size, which I duly did and recveived a new tax disc. I took the car off the road for further work in Sept. and sent the tax disc back for a refund declaring the car SORN. Got the refund through and a letter confirming SORN so all well and good I thought.

However just last week I received a reminder that tax on the car was due. I checked online using the V5 and it showed as SORN so I just ignored it. A couple of days ago I recieve a letter from the DVLA demanding the £35 I owe them for having a larger engine fitted, which I paid months ago!!

Turns out my car is on their database twice with two different reg numbers one digit different, which I hadn't noticed in the paperwork. To be fair the guy at the DVLA appologised and sorted it out for me, but if the police had been involved who knows what could have happened.

Its an old fashion case of the left arm not knowing what the right arm is doing pal
You abide by the law, do everything as per the rules and yet they still try and screw us. Its one of the reasons I'm thinking of upping sticks and buggering off abroad somewhere and start afresh
