CAR FOR SALE: Vauxhall Zafira Vauxhall Astra Mk3
BREAKING: Yellow Pug 306 Convertible
WANTED: Downhill Mountain Bike, Set Of Vauxhall Alloys
Been that way down here all week.
Blame EMR for that, they've got over a million tonnes of scrap sat at Liverpool Docks, and they're getting fined £20,000 a day for it being there.
Down here they are paying £10 per tonne whether its light or heavy.
Imagine the joy of speaking to people when you tell them their Laguna is worth about £1.50 at a stretch! lmao
good.... atleast it will stop the pikeys from stealing all our scrap metal..
www.wix.com/vxlgsi/zxr-750-r
We are paying £15 per tonne on light, sheering and heavy but OA is £20 per tonne.#
Reg EMR, they owe there bank (that went bust) 60 mill?!?!
Scrap prices are ment to be going down again yet.
Sita who are the biggest scap dealer around here other that EMR or Sims have closed 2 yards untill further notice.
Times are bad if you are a scrappy!
i got quite a lot of scrap for free the other day, he wanted rid and couldnt get anyone to pick it up and give him anything for it, so he said just take it and get it out the way.
its getting bad now, i was going to hold on to it and wait for it to go back up since ive got the space for it, but think i might just have to get rid and sell it for peanuts (still free money but not much!), otherwise im afraid soon im going to just give it away or even pay to get rid!!!!
anyone who's more clued up than me, i know its not going back up anytime soon, are we talking a year or more, should i just take it now before i start paying them to get rid!!?
if you have got the space its got to be worth chucking heavy stuff in a corner somewhere for when the price picks up again, because im sure it will, even if it takes a year or so..
at least they will stop robbing the manhole covers around here now though haha.
Don't expect the price to go up until at least February if at all. Traditionally over Xmas, the price is crap, even more so in the South West because of the two major metal processors down here, one will shutdown to clean out, so the other processor has carte blanche to drop the prices.
its a mixture of stuff really, im keeping the bulky stuff (quite a few knackered engines and tractor parts etc) whatever because i know its worth more when it eventually goes back up, but for the smaller stuff although ive got the space and it does weigh a lot combined if its going to take a year or two id rather have the space to be honest, (LOADS of discs, exhausts etc (stashing the cats away) its taking up space and looks a mess so if we're talking a year or so, ill get rid now and just keep the bulky stuff and the cats
edit: cheers galahad, will get shut now!
Lagunas aren't worth that taxed and tested mate, terrible things!
It's (mostly) EMR's fault full stop as they were the ones paying stupid money full stop in the first place.
Who actually fines them do you know? I'd have thought they (EMR) owned the bit of the docks where the scrap mountains are themselves? I might take a drive up there soon and see how high they are.
Locally the worse payer's prices have been dropping by about a tenner a week for athe last three weeks or so. This is per car by the way and they're now offering £40 per car so potenially worth depolluting for extra dosh or taking cats and alloys off and sending them as they are on steels.
There's only one Andy Morrell, only one Andy Morrell. With a packet of sweets and a cheeky smile, Morell is a paedophile.
allvaux, youre in the north west arent you? (think it was you!) what the average per ton at the moment, do you know? how long ago did you get £40 for a car?
whats the price of aluminium out of interest... i have lots of old alloy wheels/manifolds i was gonna weigh in.
Had a nova... moved on to bigger, more powerful things!!
Alloys last week for me were £650 a tonne, but, they tend to fluctuate in price all the time so worth ringing round.
Also alloy inlets and manifolds are cast alloy, not worth anything like alloy wheels.
Honest answer is have no idea how much per tonne. £40 per car was in last night's local free paper and knowing the yard who are offering that much they must be getting a few quid per tonne as there's no way in this world they'd offer that much for still polluted cars.
The amount of adverts from 'experts' (yeah, right) who pay for scrappers has dropped dramatically. Only really one yard and one scrappy advertising now and the scrappy just say free collection.
Did hear the nearer to Liverpool the better the price and also the nearer to any dock the better which seems to ring true.

Sita are the best payers around here, next is Sims then EMR. EMR arent very good with there Steel prices around here but they are the best payers on non ferrous.
lol at EMR getting the blame, nothing to do with no demand for steel then.....
For example Q3 2007 Volvo sold over 45,000 tractor units in Europe alone. Q3 2008? 115. Yep virtually none. That is just one example for one company. Things are going to get tough guys. Very tough indeed.

Scrapped a banger raced car monday, its filled with rubbish and got £10 for it and the owner told me its going down to £5 a ton next week!
Oh well more freebies![]()
It is basic economics and the Chineese have even cut back on what they are buying, it simply is not down to a massive pile of scrap at a dock, if the market for scrap was buying the steel would be selling. Orders for goods have been slashed and no one wants the raw materials. Simple as that.

But it was EMR who started paying stupid prices for scrap Trevor and sort of tried to force other people's hands in to keeping up or losing out. It now looks like EMR have shot themselves in the foot big time and have now forced the price of scrap down to a certain extent.
There's only one Andy Morrell, only one Andy Morrell. With a packet of sweets and a cheeky smile, Morell is a paedophile.
Yes, that I would agree with, they were certainly paying over 10% more than anyone else round here, that forced prices for the sellers up, it did not force prices up in the world market that much. But the fact is that is not the reason the market has gone to nothing, that is down to lack of demand on the world market. Shredded steel prices are currently about $320 a tonne, that is down $200 a tonne since last month. Perhaps the Chinese and Koreans have decided not to buy to force prices down!
Whatever the cause it just means EMR has a huge pile of scrap that is worth a lot less than they paid for it. I guess thats a bit like owning a Calibra......

EMR statment some days ago. Note the rumours of steel on the docks are in HOLLAND not Liverpool. Although they do have a lot at Liverpool.
Scrap group EMR denies talk of financial problems
Friday, 10 October 2008
European Metal Recycling, the UK-based scrap multinational, has rejected what it called "fanciful and wild" rumours regarding its independence and financial health.
"Despite unprecedented market conditions, EMR finds itself in a strong position going into the last quarter of its financial year. Market conditions favoured the industry in the first half of the year and EMR (was) well placed to take advantage on the back of a strong prior year performance" the company says in a statement sent to Steel Business Briefing.
EMR remains "fiercely independent" and is not subject to a takeover despite rumours to the contrary, the company asserts. The performance of the firm's operations is strong and US operations have not filed for bankruptcy protection, according to the statement. Rumours that the company has a large financial exposure to collapsed bank Lehman Brothers are also false and Colin Iles, who was alleged to have stepped down, remains group MD and CEO of US operations.
In the UK one supplier was refused cover by a credit insurer because of industry rumours, but this decision was reversed once the insurer received "updated information" on 2007 statutory and management accounts, according to EMR.
The company refuses to comment on rumours that it is carrying excessive stock and is making a loss on some sales transactions. SBB has been told by one source that EMR is losing up to €200/tonne on sales of scrap that was bought while prices were higher. Also, one merchant dealing with the company said it had been told by EMR’s Dutch operations that they were being fined €20,000 a day for holding too much scrap on a dockside.

sims metal on avonmouth dock also has its very own mountain of scrap

The following words in your search query were ignored because they are too common words: 9000 problem
I wouldn't go giving any credence to a statement put out by EMR to appease their shareholders.
At the moment, they are running 24hour contracts, i.e. they offer a metal yard x amount per tonne for their entire load, and they have 24hours to get the load to an EMR processing yard otherwise they will refuse to buy it in.
Quite a few metal yards in the South West have put a hold on selling to EMR as they are rather concerned they won't get their money.
This isn't idle speculation Trevor, it happens to be true.
Worth a lot less? Thats rather understating the issue there Trev! We're not just talking light iron here, we're talking heavy as well, which they would have paid significantly more than light iron (£165 at one point down here, higher up north), they are potentially losing hundreds of millions on that lot, plus the daily fines.
Heavy is still selling well into Austrailia and South Korea at over $660 a tonne. Oz needs it for rail tracks and Korea for ship building. That said Hyundai cut the factory gate price of new formed steel last week.
