Is it an 8valver or 16v? The following is from experience but only a rough guide.
Body wise, check the sills, inner wings, roof above windscreen, chassis legs, cross member, petrol tank and fuel filler cap. Personally i wouldnt worry about tailgates with spots of rust (within reason) and the same with bonnets. Metallic ones ie caribic blue, tend not to rust as much as solid coloured ones (extra lacquer).
8v engines (which a '94 most likely is) need regular oil changes to keep them sweet, otherwise they can become rattly. They are really easy to work on though and id make a point of changing the timing belt/water pump/tensioner as soon as i got it for peace of mind.
Early 16v engines (introduced late '94 iirc) can suffer from sticking valves, to check go right up to the redline in 1st then shift into 5th and feel for any misfiring, HG failure and any number of sensors, although any iv been involved with have been pretty sound. Check engine mounts too, the rubber in my one wore through eventually.
Interiors seem pretty basic but tough though the seat bolsters can wear through, but a new interior can be had for peanuts just now. Just the usual lights to look out for.
If you can try to get a completely standard one with as low miles as you can obviously. They can be found if you look hard enough.
