Agreed, unless you've been pulled before, and havent produced they can't just impound your car there and then.
The ANPR link to the MID, and the MID is not 100% up-to-date all the time, its an imposibility.

I could buy a car with no insurance, insure it there and then, and still get pulled on the way home. I am still legal, so they have to give a producer for the time taken to fourfil updates.

    like its a hire car
my nova has been updated for engine size with the dvla, is insured with all mods declared, and yet that site lists it as a 1.2 which is what it started out as?
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, thoroughly used, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming... "f*ck, what a trip!"

Thats not the case anymore, its entirely down to the discretion of the officer that stops you.

My Transit Beavertail broke down on the M5, and my insurance didn't show up on MID, and he wasn't 100% sure I was telling the truth about it being insured, and he informed me there and then that the normal procedure is to have the vehicle impounded until I can prove its insured.

In the end he gave me a producer simply because I'd had a really sh!te day being stuck on the side of the motorway for the best part of 6 hours, because not many recovery companies were equipped to deal with my Transit plus the Frontera it had perched on the back!

There are some delays in the MID updating, which is why a lot of officers will err on the side of caution and give a producer. And also, not all insurance companies are on the database still.

Can sometimes take upto 3 days for you to be put on the system.

If you have the insurance certificate with you, then you'll be ok.

That ASKMID site is actually very good, but like all things, its only as good as the information that is given to it.

Nope, as i said if you dont have the cert with you they can seize the car

Section 165A of the Road Traffic Act allows a Police Officer in Uniform who has reasonable
grounds for believing that a vehicle is being driven on a road:-

without there being in force in relation to the use on that vehicle a current policy of
insurance (Contrary to Section 143 Road Traffic Act)
    or
driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence (Contrary to Section 87(1)
    Road/Traffic Act).

To seize that vehicle, subject to conditions until the relevant documents are produced and fees paid.

Personally i think its completely wrong as all it does is help Tommy Nigerian steel your details to use for identity fraud if you are forced to carry all your details around with you.

Reckon a photocopy would count? Might be worth keeping a copy in my car.

As i said, if you have no insurance proof on you, and the ANPR says you ain got insurance they CAN impound your car there and then.
It happened to my mates Fiesta, the system hadn't updated and he had to pay £130 ish to get his car back from the impound.... Along with producing his documents.

I think all engine sizes are the cars original ones, mines down as a 1200 on that site, when its a 1600 on the v5 and insurance.

I never knew that had been changed.

    Thats pathetic.
In this day and age when they rely on insurance brokers/companies to give documents out speedily, and a computer system that only updates every 3 weeks, they then put something in place that makes them money, even if you are a law abider.

I think if i ever have that happen to me, and they do impound it, i'll go to court, especially if i have the certificate at home, why should you have to pay for a flawed system?

Next they'll tell us to keep the V5, Insurance certs, and MOT all in the car!

If it doesn't come up and you tell the police you are insured they will just phone the insurance company. had calls from the police about it before.

IIRC they are covered for that. Firstly as you are not actually paying the money to them, but to the recovery and impond company. But more importantly its down in black and white that they can do it so its just called tough.

Ask yourself; how many times have i been in scuffy old trackies and have poped out in my modded chavvy* nova for a trash to see how my new mod behaves?

*or atleast thats how the cops will see it.

shows all my 3 cars insured, and does indicate one that I suspected as having no insurance as not having one, I shall place a note on his windscreen and tell him that he has been reported.

If you click on other links you will eventually come to another site MIIC and in there it says that all fleet owners are responsible for entereing the vehicle numbers on their policy to avoid ANPR from picking you out as un-insured etc check this link: http://www.miic.org.uk/fleet/ANPR_Notice.htm

not that i'm aware of, you can check your own vehicles online but to check anyone elses you need the serial number off of the v5.
