that normally means you've either done it wrong (included spaces in the registration) or that they hold no history on the car.

seems to think a LOT of car's have Total Loss Calims on them... even my old GTE shell which after stripping I know for a fact was never crashed during its lifetime?

What constitutes a 'total loss claim'?

nah, my old GTE had never been stolen, I know for a fact the DVLA hold no adverse data on the car because I had a freind who's g/f worked at the DVLA and I asked her to check. no evidence of it on the loom either

I know it had been broken into a few times.

Total loss is when your insurance company has been advised that the damage to the car is more than about 75% of the cars market value. They will normally pay out and the car is sold on to a salvage dealer etc.

total loss means that the car is beyond economical repair so if someone slapped their door up it or smashed a window and buggered some other stuff and say the car is an astra gte which is (in the insurers eyes) an old shed not worth 500quid then they wont spend the couple of hundred fixing it, whereas the owner (who knows the true value of said car) will buy it back and fix it regardless.
