right then all. Im after an unbiased opinion on the matter of whether chavs cally t will be quickier than my mates pulsar gti-r over a quater mile. Im sure your all aware of chavs spec so no need for me to harp on about that. The pulsar however is standard except a filter and cat-back system so should be putting out in the region of 230bhp give or take a bhp or 2. I have asked on the gtiroc forum and they all conceive that pulsar will be quickier as it stands now. He is however fitting a HKS EVC gen 5 Boost controller and hybrid front mount this week so with boost at around 1 bar, should be at the 290-300bhp mark.
Now given, in standard spec (the pulsar) im not sure which will be quickier, but when the pulsaris running near 300bhp, i think there is no contest!!
for let tuning,. and non specific turbo info, read and digest max boost website. Some of the old books on the a series give a lot of useful generic information on engine tuning techniques for n/a. There are haynes books on setting up a fas road car and stuff, but tbh, google is your friend if you have the time.
Possibly true, in fact quite probably if given a long enough run up, but Rob wasnt quoting what he felt the top speed was, he was just commenting on the most he had done in it so far.
things like richard stones book(s) are very good but unless your totaly up on the fundamentals of engine design then its a bit of a mare to crunch.
dave vizzards book on the Ford SOHC engine is really good and lots of it can be applied to GM 8v engines as the ford head is pretty much the same bar verticle valves and no kink in the intake port, but the principles are the same etc.
another good book for basic fundamentals of vehicles it the OLD AA book of the car (landscape A4 sized thing with a silver cover)
TBH though, all talking of books to one side, there is no substitute for just giving it a go, even if you get it wrong you can learn a lot from what happens trying!
true, although some engines are more pennies than othres, for example its currently running at about a million pennies, and still increasing for my latest one though
I think im gonna buy an XE and just not put it in anythin yet, get it in the garage and start fiddlin, am i right in thinkin that as long as the block and head are sound the rest can be sorted? Ie if big ends are gone or stuff like that?

Ive got a bl00dy pub pool table in my garage so no room
Id quite fancy messing with an engine in my garage so i might try and get rid of the table and the mountain of junk thats piled ontop of it. What sort of money are we talking here? Plus ive got to buy tools aswell as most of my dads are in imperial so how much for a "starter" set if you like? Enough to get going but not nessiseraly all the tools id need
Im 99% sure im getting a mr2 mk2 NA rev2 next so is there any particular (cheap) engine which would suit me? Both in way of being a good starting point for a newbie and similar to that of the mr2.
Id start with an 8v, which in 1,8 form should be almost free. Quality counts with tools, so halfrauds all the way. id go for their big toolkit which is often reduced to 100 quid from 149. secialist tools such as spring comprssors nd ring compressors are about a tenner each.
might be an idea, depends on cost. IKO nothing beats hands on experience. its hard for to say what the best way to learn is. Ive always operated on the principle that if my car is broken ive nothing to lose bar the cost of gaskets trying to fix it. So long as you understand what the bits do, the consequences of cocking it up etc and work methodicaly you will be fine. it constantly amazes me how many people are scared of head gaskets etc!!
You know what they no.1 reason i havent done more than i have to my car is? My dad lmao
Hes one of those "Oh give it here, ill do it. You dont do it like that" people, but he doesnt know much more than me either lmao
I was only scraping the rust of the edge of the discs and from the calipers the other week and he came out watching me, what did he possibley think i could do wrong there? lol I know he'll just constantly be looking over my sholder and ill end up hitting him or something lol
Ive just looked at our local colleges websites and theres only one course, Basic Car Maintainance 2h per week for 36weeks - £100. No other details so i might go down, surely they do more courses than that too.
Ill have a look into it but £100s that halfords toolbox bought. I dunno, has anyone else done one of these courses? What are they like, or are they realy just for changing brake pads, oil, filters etc, or do they go abit further into maybe changing cambelts?
But tbh with the right tools i cant see changing the cam belt to be that difficult, or am i assuming too much?
cambelts a piece of piss. requires the minimum of tools. The consequences of getting it wrong however are severe. get a manual, thoroughly familiarise yourself with what needs done and then get on with it. work methodically and turn it over by hand when you are finished. Youll be fine.
I owe a lot to my old man, hes helped me a lot evem when it was only a case of giving me the confidence to start and checking it over when id finished. first nova transplant we did i labelled everything and followed haynes to the letter, dad heck what I was doing and helped me lift it out. The last one i did I never labelled anything and did virtually all of it myself.
I went out in the pulsar yesterday and either my memory is wrong, or more likely it wasn't running properly the first time i went in it... but it's quick. Quicker than my Calibra from memory.
Only one thing could possibly save me! Nitrous!lmao
eeeee....... usually our cars r never ready , always some progress goin on , so why whait till u 60 , give it a go while u r young
