Originally the C16XE found in Corsa GSI's pre-1996 had 109bhp.
This dropped to 106bhp when the X16XE ecotec replaced it in the GSi's and 1.6 Sport.
The other 1.6 ecotec, X16XEL (L meaning Low output), found in astra mk4's etc were only 98bhp but pushed out a bit more torque than the X16XE.
The C16XE is the best (and rarest) of the bunch and with just a set of throttle bodies it will open up another 30-40% more power.
I've driven both the C16 and X16 and the C16 pulls much hard through mid range through to top revs. It seems to rev slightly easier and picks up much better than the X16. This isn't in just one car, this is having driven a few of each model. Only disadvantage is the age of the C16. Its nearly 13 years old from being built, so a good 14-15 years old development wise.
The X16 is basically a lower emission engine to comply with modern regulations (hence the EGR re-ciculation system).
X16XEL had 100bhp, but about 3-4 lb ft more torque than the X16XE but was available around 2000-2500rpm opposed to the XE's 3500 odd rpm. Basically, an old biddy/lazy version of the XE.
Going from thr above picture, you can see the plastic manifold on the C16. X16 having a metal inlet (below). If you look to the front and the right of the engine, you can also see the EGR pump and system which connects to the exhaust manifold.
Nearly, only the 1993/Early 1994 GSi's had the C16XE engine. THe 1994/1995 GSi's came with the early X16XE engine.
This then stopped for 2 years and they used the X14XE engine in the Sports (which used to be the 1.4 8v SRi, then turned 1.4 16v SRi, then Sport, although the engines were the same), then re-introduced the 1.6 in late 1996 in SOME models (pretty rare to find a P reg 1.6, but im sure theres a couple about), but came back out in 1997 in the R Red as the 1.6 sport.

think you will find thats not an egr pump, infact it has nothing to do with the egr, thats the secondary air injection with pumps air into the exhaust to help with the warming up of the cat....
