According to a book, Flat out and flat broke, it is Perry McCarthy, quality driver just never had it easy or much luck, exspecially when he was driving for Andrea Moda F1 team.
The original Stig (Black race suit) was Perry McCarthy, new and not so good in white race suit is the bod that did the driving where they had a guy parasend (sp. ?) into the back of a CLK convertible

IMO its always the same bloke (since they drove the old one off an aircraft carrier). They couldnt use the factories test driver since that would defeat the point of having an indipendant motoring magazine.
Also it's way too consistant to be different people.
I think he's probably told to exagerate certain effects on the cars to make it obvious what Jezzer is on about. The VXR was the most obvious one. J says it understears terribly so the stig winds the lock on with his foot to the floor!
