Just done mine on Sunday, I was told get the engine nice and warm then cover the dizzy and coil with a plastic bag, then spray everywhere with engine degreaser or trf then jet wash off, I did that and had no probs

    Re: Cleaning engine bay?

Didn't fancy wetting my engine bay. I actuli cleaned mine by hand! My head was due to go on my car and got delayed at the engine centre till the following day. Kinda annoyed I took a couple hours cleaning the bay area on my mk3 gsi. I began with the header tank, removing it and cleaning underneath it... Next one by one my alarm, wiring loom, ht coil bla bla. Just enough to get to the body. Battery was out so cleaned the the tray. Changed my lights n grill! So got underneath them too. Repeated on the otherside. Made all the difference being a red car.

i'd never spray my engine with a jet wash thats just asking for trouble really. Electrics covered or not engines aren't supposed to get wet lol

I just do it by hand.

    Re: Cleaning engine bay?

if youre going to use a pressure washer, then 1) anything elec should be covered up anyway, who has wire showing, battery should be covered, most cars have battery covers nowadays, and 2) do it when your engine is cold, not hot, as this will cause parts to crack

to clean you can use a diluted alkali wheel cleaner, megs engine cleaner, autosmart g101 apc, or good old wd40

just make sure its all wiped off properly, as for dressing black plastics like engine cover, under the arches, hoses, etc, autosmart highstyle is great for it

when the engines warm spray autoglym vinyl and rubber care close the bonnet have a cuppa go back and remove excess with an old cloth and admire. Too much of a risk using a pressure washer
