    Water Marks...

Had a search, couldn't find anything so don't bit my head off if it's been asked before... and reeeeeeeeeeepost just isn't very funny anymore.

Having moved to the South West, imagine my surprise to what appears to be a chalk mine in the kettle... and nice minging snail trails on my new black shirt courtesy of the iron. That I can live with, water marks on my black car, I can't.

So, whats the options... aside driving home to Scotland where the real water is, or spending £70 a week on Evian from the local Tesco.

Do water purification tablets work, ie if I dropped one in the watering can before rinsing.

    Cheers

can`t you just buy a 5 litre bottle of water for £1 from somewhere, sure tesco sells that size, and use that to rinse with through a jet wash,if not a damp microfibre cloth.

Try and keep it wet, till your ready to dry it. You wait till the summer, it's proper imposable to not get them.

water purification tablets only kill bacteria and make water safe to drink
has nothing to do with hardness or softness of the water (i.e. the calcium salts content)

    your going to have to buy a calcuim filter water jug for ya kettle n iron water;
try an industrial magnet on the water mains pipe better thro plastic obviously, and an industrial calcium filter also for the mains inlet....for shower head, washing machine and your water heater elements

Spray the wet car with quick detailer before you dry it.

Am taking it you do dry it? As that should stop water marks.

    Re: Water Marks...

    Hmmm....

To the last post, the first time I didn't bother and let it dry itself... come the morning I was convinced those chaps who "love" cars had been getting over excited near it. Second time (washed twice in 3 weeks, sheesh!) I dried it off with a chamois and ok so I never got water marks but the finish was dull, no lustre to it and the trails the chamois left were obvious.

Suppose I could try rinsing it down with water from the tap, then perhaps use bottled water in a bucket to dry it off with the chamois... ie, rinse the chamois in the bottled water regulary? Quick detailer is ok, but that's fine if time allows but I'm on about the mess it's left in after I've given it a quick wash. Black makes it look x10 worse too.

    Hmmmm!

    Re: Water Marks...

If your drying it then you shouldn't really get water marks or dulling. Keep ringing the shammie out to remove the excess water out then it wont leave trails.

Rain water has less chalk and such in it, if you can get a watering fan to fill up (shouldn't be hard at the mo) then use that as a final rinse off.

    Re: Water Marks...

I don't get water marks after drying the car, well except the dirty dribbles under the mirrors and down the back bumber etc once the water has finally drained out. The problem I have now is even after drying the car with a new chamois, it leaves faint dulling... like it's been dried down with a dirty rag (if that makes sense) and that's even with rinsing the chamois regular.

Moving on, perhaps drying towels would give a far better finish... dunno whay I didn't think of that earlier to be fair.

    D'oh!

Towels are better in some ways. But i still use my fake shammie. Its awesome far better than a towel and real shammie.

    Re: Water Marks...

Likewise, it's an auto Glym synthetic chamois I use but because the water its soaking up is full of crap, in effect it's just thinly spreading this about the car and hence the kinda smeary, dull residue it leaves. Don't have this issue back home (moving back isn't a viable option before it gets mentioned) hence need to either try using bottled water to rinse the chamois regulary, or have a go with drying towels. Or take it up the M4 at 140mph but that's a bit risky.

    Re: Water Marks...

use bottled water to rinse your chamois as that will have less sediment. Chamois it well and untill almost completely dry (no standing water drops etc). Should be alright mate. If not but of high resin polish, with this you dont need to do a full cut polish just 1 panel at a time put on thinly, and buff off. Will remove water marks and add shine

not exactly sure how any kind of magnet is going to attract/remove calcium carbonate which also physiocally disolved in water.

    Calcium carbonate is not magnetic

    Re: Water Marks...

Mate of mine had this thing that clipped on to the hosepipe like an ioniser or something, he swore it left the car free of water markslmao i'll have a google see if i can find it.
I normally try to keep the car wet hitting it with the hose afew times during the wash then chamois.
Benn has the best idea with the rainwater i think, could get a barrel maybe piped into the house or a shed gutter to catch it?

    Edited to add- http://www.amazon.com/Mr-Clean-AutoD.../dp/B0006M56CE
I'm sure it was this try googling ''Mr. Clean AutoDry Car Wash''

magnets to fuel lines are essential to iron fuel lines to stop the injectors getting blocked with rust

    Re: Water Marks...

hard water ares suffer with your problem more o than others. but like has been said try not to let your car dry out when washing it an i would advise using a micro fibre cloth as i have found this reduces dulling and water marks also try to keep on top of polishing your car with a quality polish like meguiars or auto glym, as this will help when it comes to cleaning your car, is it really worth using bottled water? no. use the chance to polish your car more often.
