what polish?

hi all. i have got a corsa sport. i am planning on getting rid of some rust on my car. i know that i have to polish after i am done to try and keep a similar shade of colour as the rest of the car but not to sure what polish to use and what colour? any advice would be welcome

Top brands for polish and stuff are Meguiars and Auto Glym.

You don't really need to worry about colour unless you are talking about T-Cut, in which case I would go for yellow. IIRC, apart from T-Cut, no other car care products are colour specific.

if you are using rattle cans its best to get them from the dealer, halfords ones always seem slightly darker to me

Sorry, misread the original post in regards to "colour", if you find a car paint supplier in your area, they should be able to do an exact colour match for your car, and provide it in rattle can form if you prefer, or if you don't have access to other means.

thats what i had done tbh, but the 1st can i got was a duff and the paint kept separating

cheers for all the help folks. i have a vauxhall dealer just round the corner from me but i might just go to a body shop to get an exact match. i was planning on using a rattle can as i don't have a compressor or paint gun. never tried to get rid of rust before but thought i would give it a go. has anyone got any tips or done it before? it does looks to be mainly just surface rust

Try and keep the area your working on as small as possible, with every level of preperation, the area is going to get bigger if you are trying to blend the edges in with the rest of the paintwork.

Try and do as much by hand as you can, with wet and dry paper.

Spray lightly, if you aren't confident, practise on something to get your distance right. And a tip that I found really helpful - if you are lacquering, spray the lacquer on while the last coat of paint is just tacky. Then let the lacquer harden properly before finishing the blending of the new and old paintwork.

cheers mate. the only other problem with me is i don't have a garage so going to have to find somewhere indoors to do the spraying. does it make much of a difference spraying it indoors. there is the obvious paint going in the wind but apart from that is there much difference?

I completely resprayed my missus' bumpers outside and they came out just fine.

You just need to be wary of weather conditions, thats all - preferably do it when it's not windy or move the car to shield you from a light breeze if working on the side. Work when it's a bit warm, or hotter, but don't bother if it looks like it's going to rain in the next half hour or so

looks like a good job mate. can't see the difference from the car or bumpers. first thing is i need the car back from the garage for it's mot. i will let everyone know how i got on
