    Orange Peel

Damn it! Why is it whenever I spray with cans I always bloody get orange peel. I've just sprayed some mirror housings (pics to come soon) and they look bloody crap because of the orange peel. Anyone got any ideas where i'm going wrong, or anny tips to avoid it. Can't get rid of it now, as i've lacquered it, and run out of basecoat lol.

They always come out like that. Celly is poor quality paint and needs loads of work to get them shiney.

You've yet to finish them off though. You can't just spray and hope for the best. You need to build up lots of light coats of lacquer and then flat back using 1500 grit wet paper then maybe 2000 grit. Flat back lightly until all low spots have been removed so you get an even haze. At this point the orange peel effect is no more.

At this point you need to cut back using a cutting compound. G3 is best for this. Give it a good few goings over. You'll not acheive much of a shine from this. You need to give it a vigourish polish using a good quality polish. I use Autoglym super resin polish.

You keep polishing until you acheive shine. I did the mirror housings on my Cavalier with this method. Spent some time on them and they came up like this...

I sprayed this using rattle cans.

Not shiny enough Si! No matter what you say, you go on sunbeds! Your reflection is the same colour as the house bricks! lmao

How long did they take you start to finish?

Nope I didn't actually Wayne. I just go very brown and that was mid-summer. I'd just come back from France in my Cabrio so caught the sun quite well.

It took me about an hour per mirror, but I like to get things right. But that's working time, doesn't include drying time.

Yes don't have the Cav or the cabrio anymore.

The rims took me a little longer. About 4 hours per rim, again that wasn't including drying time. Usually I spent an afternoon mucking around with them. But that's because I was using primative materials for prepping. Need to get some good powertools really.

Ok that explians why you looked the same colour as the house bricks but what about your left leg it looks a lot fatter than your right leg, does that mean uneven coating of paint or are your legs really different in size?

Or you didn't get Elephantitus by any chance when you went to France?lmao

No, jokes aside, you done a real good job ! well done! did you use a spray can or bought exact match paint from the dealer and used your own compressor and a sparay gun, normally mirrors don't require a lot of paint so a sparay can can be used.

No, I used a spray can for the mirrors, Just 'hi-cote' cans. Decent colour match. Used about half a can of base coat and half a can of lacquer per mirror housing. Takes more with spray cans as the spray patern is so crap and uneven. Need pay special attention to the angles you're spraying at. Sometimes coating the thing again and again at all angles to avoid dark spots.

I got the paint for the spray gun matched though, I'm using acrylic for that. So nice to spray with. Much nicer than using cans.

Here's the rims I did....which incidently was my first real attempt at spray work. Shagged up the first one, just a few dark spots. But redid it and they all came up like this. Not bad for a first attempt.

All my spray work is self tought.

Brilliant job, however, does paint cling to alloys well, do you have to use any etchant first or just staright sparay on after prep- filling and rubbing. My wheels need sray too due to curb marks.

No, I didn't as I mainly used the current paint as a primer. Just rubbed it back to its original undercoat. Then I used a light dusting of primer before flatting that back and then I sprayed the new base coat on.

The rims still look like the above. Need regular waxing though as they are sprayed with cellulose which isn't that good. Looses a bit of its shine. But the paint didn't chip or lift or anything and when I saw the car last a few weeks ago, the rims still looked good.

It really was just a practice session really. Just wanted to teach myself. Now moved onto spray guns and a compressor. Will start to have a play about with 2k in the summer. Got a Nova to spray then as well.

It's not a problem getting it shiny, thats ok. It's the horrible bloody paint texture itself thats annoying me lol.

Yes, and you sand that back to get a good finish. You maybe spraying the paint on too thick. It's better to have loads and loads of light coats with it hazy than it is to have a shiney coat with OP in it. It's easier to flat back haze as opposed to OP.

Yeah I understand what you're saying, I used to spray on thick coats with cans, but tonight I tried doing it lightly, and got the same results. Guess i'll have to spray them again, otherwise i've gotta go right through the lacquer and then to the paint.

Well I conclude that spray cans are c-r-a-p lol. Need to get a single phase motor for my compressor and start using my gun I reckon.

Really really light coats. Make sure you hold the can at a decent distance too.

If you have enough lacquer on there then there's no need to spray them again, just spend some time flatting them back. Go out and buy some G3 and 1500grit sand paper.

They aren't the best. But if you take your time and follow procedure then you'll get a good finish. I sprayed that housing above with rattle cans. That's got a finish like the rest of the car as you can see.

Ok, cheers for the advice. But the orange peel isn't in the lacquer, it's in the basecoat.

No, it won't be in the basecoat. Orange peel is the effect of light falling onto uneven surfaces. You can combat this by flatting the lacquer and getting an even surface. You'll not have orange peel then. It's only an effect you get from the light reflection surface.
